Forster Pechstein is one of the most distinctive sites in both the Palatinate Region and for us at Reichsrat von Buhl. The mineral heritage from the Pechsteinkopf, the black basalt, gives the wine here its undeniably distinctive note. No where else in this region will you find more basalt, and no where else does the basalt appear as clearly as in wine from the Forster Pechstein vineyards. The personification of the purist minerality, our Pechstein embodies a true Grand Cru.
Soil:
A formerly active volcano, the Pechsteinkopf located just above Forst, spread large quantities of volcanic rocks ages ago. Therefore, in the subsoil of the site, there are several veins of basalt extending like roots towards the end of the valley. The surface is piled with loose basalt rubble, red sandstone, weathered soil and sandy clay. Further into the soil, at about 2 m deep, there are layers of clay and limestone similar to many Forster sites. The amount of clay in Pechstein results in a high water capacity of the soil, in turn creating a high mineralization that helps to keep a perfect water balance during the growing season. The result is a great physical maturity.
