2017 REITERPFAD "In der Hohl" Riesling GG

Since the 2014 vintage, we have again been producing a Grand Cru in the Premier Cru “In der Hohl”. The long break was due to the fact that the entire Reiterpfad (with exception of the Hofstück plot) was only replanted in 2004. We wanted to give the new roots the necessary time to work their way down deep into the soil to produce grapes with real terroir character. The must was fermented and aged in both a Stückfass (1200 liter barrel) as well as in a used tonneaux barrel and finally bottled in November 2018.

Soil:
Millions of years ago, where the western border of our vineyards now sit, there was a huge collapse of the Rhine Rift Valley. Here, layer upon layer, the sea deposited its sediments. Later the mountains of the Haardt rose up and a calcareous sedimentary deposit became visible. Today, it is this sediment deposit combined with the plots’ microclimate that provides the soil with its unique composition in turn making this wine so special. The walls around the plot protect the vineyard against late frost and help provide natural shade in the summer creating the distinctively subtle acidic structure found in Reiterpfad.
